Smart Cosmos is an IoT solutions platform and co-brand of Smartrac. Smartrac creates RFID transponders used in the tracking of products in supply chains and they also serve as a point of interaction for consumer engagement. The Smart Cosmos platform enables the visualization of real-time data and analytics with objects embedded with Smartrac RFID transponders. Smart Cosmos provides insight into daily operations with products from their origins in factories to consumers in and out of home.

Data sheets are sales and marketing tools designed to explain various Smart Cosmos turnkey solutions available by Smartrac. Their purpose is to break down complex IoT cloud solutions into an easily digestible format for potential clients at trade shows and meetings. They serve as a point of reference for the solution, a call to action, and a demonstration of how RFID technology works. An NFC tag is applied to the back of all data sheets so that a potential client can tap the tag with their smartphone in order to quickly navigate to supplemental information online or the appropriate sales contacts at Smartrac.

White papers are designed for use as product references and quick start guides for the various Smart Cosmos solutions available at Smartrac. The goal of the white paper design is to provide as much information as possible about a particular product offering so that clients can implement the solutions into their own systems as easily as possible. The white paper layout was created as a template to be used in any form of editorial layout whether that be for internal documents or external documents related to Smart Cosmos branded products and services.

The Smart Cosmos Apfelspritz (Apple Spritz) can design was created as a branded giveaway for trade shows in Germany. The goal was to provide some refreshments to potential customers visiting the Smartrac booth while they learn more about RFID tags and Smart Cosmos solutions. The soda can is the point of interaction for potential customers to demo the Experiences solution. An NFC tag was applied to the can to demonstrate a particular Smartrac NFC tag designed for use on metallic materials. When a customer scans the NFC tag with their Smartphone they are taken to supplemental marketing information related to the Experiences solution.

The Smart Cosmos Experiences demo was created for the Apfelspritz (Apple Spritz) can design. When a customer taps the NFC tag with their Smartphone they are taken to supplemental web based marketing information related to the Experiences solution. It was designed to serve as a practical demonstration for both Smartrac NFC tags and the Smart Cosmos Experiences solution. The content teaches the user about all the applications in which NFC can be utilized as a point of interaction with consumers. It also serves as a means of contact to sales teams and provides the user access to other marketing collateral regarding RFID products by Smartrac and solutions by Smart Cosmos.

Traceless Investigator

The Traceless Investigator app was designed as an additional layer of security to pair with RFID, with the goal of identifying counterfeit and gray-market products in the supply chain through the use of barcodes and QR codes embedded into packaging at the factory. When a serial number is scanned that does not match up with the predetermined codes embedded at the factory a brand can identify products that have sneaked into their supply chain. Empowering brands to backtrack holes in the supply chain as well as diverting counterfeit and gray-market products from reaching their consumers.

Traceless Inspector

The Traceless Inspector app was designed as a tertiary layer of security to pair with QR code/Barcode, and/or RFID, with the goal of identifying authentic products enabled with Smartrac Traceless Markings. Traceless Markings are an invisible layer of security that can be embedded at the factory and cannot be seen without a special Traceless Camera. When a Traceless serial number is missing from a product or the scanned serial number does not match up with the predetermined serial numbers embedded at the factory, a brand can identify products that have sneaked into their supply chain. Empowering brands to backtrack holes in the supply chain as well as diverting counterfeit and gray-market products from consumers.

Pain Points

user interaction

The addition of an external camera created interaction challenges to the user interface for hand held users. The pain point being when the phone is hand held in a standard portrait position the user's palm obstructs the external camera. The solution was to create a scanning process that would automatically rotate the entire app and camera point of view based upon the orientation of the user's phone. This allowed a hand held user to take a photograph of the product and then simply flip the phone to take the Traceless marking photograph without obstructing the external camera. To cover all scanning use cases we also allow the app to lock its angle of orientation.

Interactive Sales Tool

The Interactive sales tool was designed with the goal of creating an offline touchscreen storytelling device focused in retail applications that could easily explain Smartrac RFID products and the Smart Cosmos solutions called Metrics and Experiences. I created a website designed in a local sandbox environment that could be installed on any computer or large mobile device. The demo features Spyder as the brand in context and takes an audience from the macro to micro levels of retail supply chain visibility, consumer engagement, and analytic insights provided by Smartrac and Smart Cosmos enabled products. The design requirements were to create a horizontal 16:9 layout that would fill up the standard touchscreen laptop, monitor, or television, be able to run offline, and provide an easily navigable menu for the presenter.
